The Day After

It's the day after Thanksgiving, some referr to it as Black Friday. I like to think of it as Christmas Friday because this is the day we bust out the Christmas music, transform the Manor into Christmas fantasy, and embrace the holiday season. My fall wardrobe will be swapped for my winter/holiday one. I will be drinking ridiculous amounts of Starbucks gingerbread lattes and peppermint mochas. I will be shopping and wrapping gifts. We'll frequent a few Christmas parties. All in all, we will enjoy a month of fa-la-la---my fave time of the year! We'll see how the little Doodle responds the season. Let's hope he's not a Scrooge about it!

Mmmm...Soup

The other night, when storms were brewing here in town, I made this delicious corn and cheese chowder. I decided to be a little fancy and make my own bread bowls . I found mini sourdough loaves at Trader Joes for 99 cents each. I cut out the center and filled the bread bowls with soup. It was the perfect meal for a chilly autumn evening!
1 large potato diced
1 bay leaf
1/4 tsp cummin
4 tbsp butter
4tbsp flour
2 1/3 cups buttermilk
5 green onions chopped
2 cups corn (frozen or fresh)
1/4 tsp of each: nutmeg,
ceyenne red pepper,
chili powder
2 cups grated cheese

Boil potato, bay leaf, and cummin in 2 cups of water for 15 min. covered.
Meanwhile, melt butter in saucepan, add flour and mix until pasty and bubbly. Gradually stir in buttermilk. On medium heat, whisk buttermilk mixture until it thickens. When potatoes are done, add them with their water and spices into buttermilk mixture. Add onions, corn and seasonings. Let soup simmer for 10 min. Add cheese and stir to melt.

Lucky 7...Or So We Hope

October was quite a month for little Westly...a big month of firsts, some good and some not so good.
This month he moved downstairs to sleep in his own room and did just fine

He tackled his first full-length novel, but got up on words like 'thither', 'mischance', and 'felicity'

His sense of humor developed

He experienced good ol' Avila Barn

He had his first medical emergency

He celebrated his first Halloween!
Also, he cut his two top teeth and started scooting around on the floor. This month's goal: crawling! Stay tuned!

First Taste

We decided Halloween would be a great night to introduce West to some rice cereal.
I'm ready, Mama and Daddy!
I'm a little unsure...
...but willing to give it a try...
...Oh! Not what I expected!
Can I be done?
